Third Annual Historic Soldiers Weekend
October 30-31, 2006

The U.S. flag flies above an authentic Army Jeep at the third Annual Historic Soldiers Weekend in Burlington, NJ. [more photos]

The Third Annual Historic Soldiers Weekend brought together even more re-enactors and participants from every period in history than the previous year. There were new impression represented this year, including Spanish American war, Indian war Calvary, Civil War hospitals and blacksmiths, several WWII airborne troopers and even a rifle squad that looked like they walked right out of the jungles of Vietnam. These participants turned what could have been a very tough weekend "weather-wise" into an unprecedented success.

Hundreds of spectators attended the event, stopping to hear the first person accounts, the guest speakers, and even to purchase an autographed book or two; despite a dark and rainy Friday evening, and the high winds that tested the tent strength of each participant.

The event again drew crowds that consisted of people of all interests, from WWII veterans who wanted to see their old equipment to grade school students with their homework assignments in hand.

Re-enactors endured the unseasonable weather with a smile, handing out their expertise on their respective subjects to the public. This year's best display was voted to be the 9th German display, which included period tents, vehicles (with their own guard dog) and various artillery pieces. This year's guest speaker list included several authors and veterans such as Tom Kindre, Gottfried Dulias, Brain Moreland and the Tuskegee Airmen. This years main act was Abbott and Costello (the ultimate A and C), who performed marvelously, capturing a crowd each time they went on stage and when they made the rounds about the encampment.

The Army National Guard out of Burlington City, Thanks to their highly professional NCO's, brought tents for not only their own display but for the authors and veterans as well. Equipped with vehicles, weapons and a camp display, they were a popular stop for the public.

We are looking forward to another great year at the Fourth Annual Historic Soldiers Weekend, and we hope you will be a part of it! So please come down to the riverfront promenade in Burlington and take a walk through history!
